Family Discipleship March Week 2

March 9th - 8th

Glory Mountain

The Big Picture: Have you ever climbed a big hill? How did you feel when you reached the top? Were you out of breath?  One day Jesus took Peter, James, and John on a long hike up a high mountain. We don't know if they are out of breath when they reached the top. What we do know is that they saw something awesome. Jesus was transfigured! That word means he was changed. But he wasn't transformed from a robot into a semi truck or a caterpillar into a butterfly. Jesus wasn't transformed into another thing. He stayed human; he just showed himself to be who he really was. God's glorious son!
Watch the Youtube video for this week together
This weeks big truth is:
Jesus is the glorious Son of God, who is perfectly holy.
This weeks memory verse is:
For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.
 (Psalm 95:3-4)

What happened to Jesus? What did this transfiguration teach us about who he is?

Reading 3: MATTHEW 17:3-4
PETER'S BAD IDEA
lf you saw what Peter, James, and John saw, how would you respond? Do you have any idea what was wrong with Peter's idea to build three little tents? (If not, wait for what God says next!)
Reading 4: MATTHEW 17:5
THE FATHER'S VOICE
Is What two things did God say about his Son? What one thing did he tell his disciples to do? How do we obey that command ("Listen to him") today?
Reading 5: MATTHEW 17:6-9
After the Transfiguration
How did the three disciples react to what they saw and heard? Why might Jesus have told them to be quiet about what they saw and heard until after his resurrection? Should we be quiet now about what we know about Jesus?
GOSPEL CONNECTION
Here, on Glory Mountain, we learn that Jesus is the glorious Son of God, who liked God the Father and Spirit, is perfectly holy. Now think about this. It would be surprising if a good man died for our sins. It would be amazing if a very important person--like a king00would take the punishment that we deserve. It, then, is truly astounding that Jesus--the King of glory--should lay down his life for us and die in our place. Peter, James, and John were confused, afraid, and surely stunned on the day Jesus took them atop the mountain. And while we should be amazed, we should not be fearful because we can take comfort in knowing Jesus died for us on Mount Canary, a hill outside Jerusalem. he shows his glory to us by dying and rising again. What a glorious King!
